About Me

I am a photographer based in Ontario, specializing in nature, landscapes, and wildlife. My goal is to reveal the extraordinary in the ordinary, encouraging viewers to pause and appreciate the world around them. Through my work, whether capturing a fleeting bird or the vast horizon, I aim to create deep connections and evoke emotions, celebrating nature's enduring beauty. My photography, like relationships, teaches us to cherish life's small, beautiful moments and to act to take responsibility to care for and preserve our wildlife and environment.

Fine Art Photography

Photography Statement

My photography is inspired by a deep love for nature, wildlife, and landscapes, and a desire to capture the beauty in everyday moments. I focus on the often-overlooked wonders around us—whether it’s the delicate flight of a bird or the vast, timeless landscapes—that so many miss in the rush of daily life. Through my lens, I aim to invite others to connect with the natural world and foster a greater appreciation and responsibility for the environment.

Photography is my way of sharing the magic of the world, reminding us of its fleeting preciousness. I hope my work encourages viewers to see the world with a sense of awe and reverence, helping them reconnect with what truly matters.

Approach

As a fine art photographer, my focus is on capturing nature in its raw, unfiltered beauty—whether it’s the soft glow of dawn, the vibrant energy of wildlife, or the serenity of a quiet landscape. I strive to create images that evoke stillness, encouraging reflection and a deeper emotional connection with nature.

Most of my photography occurs during road trips that we carefully plan to capture breathtaking landscapes and wildlife. My husband and I invest time in researching potential locations before our travels to ensure we are fully prepared for each adventure. What fascinates me the most, however, is the sense of discovery that comes when we arrive; there is always something unexpected waiting to be explored. I also feel a sense of humility when surrounded by vast landscapes or encountering wildlife up close, as it reminds me of the awe-inspiring beauty and resilience of the natural world.

One of the challenges of traveling is being in the right place at the right time. It can be difficult to capture the golden hour, blue hour, sunrise, and sunset due to the unpredictable nature of travel. However, I have learned to adapt and make the most of the remarkable moments that come my way.

One of my photography techniques involves shooting from my kayak. I position myself at the water's edge to capture reflections of autumn colors. This process requires both patience and precision, as I must carefully maneuver the kayak to frame each shot while staying calm despite unpredictable winds. These winds can easily shift my position, making it challenging to maintain focus while balancing my camera, the kayak, and the natural surroundings.

I have faced challenges in capturing a photo of an eagle perched on a tree with a large fish in its talons, all while navigating waters that were rougher than usual. However, through persistence and careful maneuvering to avoid the rocks, I was finally able to get the desired photo. (See the awards section for the photo.)

This process is not without its risks. My camera and lens are not water-resistant, so I must be especially mindful of both my equipment and the elements. Navigating the environment carefully is essential to ensure that neither is compromised. Every shot results from a careful and deliberate approach, requiring a deep level of focus and balance.

Wildlife photography comes with a unique set of challenges. Whether I am capturing birds in flight, elk during the rut, a deer nursing its young, or tortoises mating, I always prioritize respect for the animals and their space. My goal is to remain unobtrusive, ensuring that I don’t disturb their natural behavior while still striving for close, intimate shots. Achieving this delicate balance requires commitment; I often take numerous photos and patiently wait for the perfect moment to present itself. This dedication to the subject and the craft is at the core of my work.

Growth and Learning

After each trip, I return home and carefully review my photos, comparing them to the works of accomplished photographers I admire. This process helps me identify areas for improvement and refine my approach. I also participate in workshops and online learning opportunities to further develop my skills. Learning doesn’t stop after the trip; I continue to grow by absorbing the wisdom of other professionals, both in the field and through education opportunities. This ongoing pursuit of growth is essential to my artistic journey.

Signature Work

My signature work celebrates the subtle beauty of nature, whether it’s through expansive landscapes or intimate wildlife portraits. I aim to reveal the richness and complexity of the world around us, inviting viewers to pause and reflect on life’s remarkable moments. Each photograph serves as a reminder to slow down and embrace the wonders of nature, seeing the world through a lens of awe and appreciation.

Reflection

Through my photography, I aim to inspire a deep sense of awe and a renewed commitment to preserving the natural world. Each image tells a story, capturing fleeting moments that might otherwise go unnoticed. I invite you to join me on this journey to experience the serenity of nature and foster a sense of compassion for the planet we all share.

Academic Educational Background

I hold a Ph.D. in Philosophy with a specialization in Curriculum, Teaching, and Learning from the University of Toronto. Additionally, I have an M.Ed. in Foundations of Learning and Teaching Behavior, specializing in Adult Education from Brock University, and an Honors BA in Early Childhood Education from Toronto Metropolitan University.

Throughout my career as an early childhood educator, supervisor, and professor, I have developed meaningful relationships with students, children, families, and colleagues, establishing a legacy of genuine care and compassion.

Words of Wisdom that have guided me throughout my life.

A few final last words from Frankel (1984), who advises: Don’t aim at success --the more you aim at it and make it a target, the more you are going to miss it. For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side effect of one’s personal dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one’s surrender to a person other than oneself. Happiness must happen, and the same holds for success; you have to let it happen by not caring about it. I want you to listen to what your conscience commands you to do and go on to carry it out to the best of your knowledge. Then you will live to see that in the long run -- in the long run, I say success will follow you precisely because you had forgotten to think about it (p.17).
