This Iceland 2024 portfolio is my work towards capturing wildlife and landscapes from an 18-day, 3,000-kilometer journey along the South East and North East Coasts, Landmannalaugar, and Snaefellsnes.

This is a work in progress and will evolve as I continue to curate photos and write our travel story.

Abstract Artistry of the Natural World

Iceland Landscapes

Iceland's landscapes are a symphony of contrasts and natural wonders, where rugged coastlines meet expansive lava fields and majestic glaciers carve through volcanic peaks. Geothermal hot springs steam against a backdrop of moss-covered valleys, while vibrant green pastures provide grazing grounds for Icelandic horses and sheep. Waterfalls cascade from dramatic cliffs into crystalline rivers that wind through remote fjords and tranquil lakes. Whether under the soft glow of the Midnight Sun or the dancing Northern Lights, Iceland's landscapes inspire awe and reverence, inviting exploration of its unique and ever-changing beauty.

Horses

The Icelandic horse, with its graceful mane and distinctive gait, epitomizes the spirit of Iceland's rugged beauty. Captured against backdrops of volcanic landscapes, serene fjords, and dramatic waterfalls, these images showcase their strength and elegance in harmony with the country's breathtaking scenery.

Landmannalaugar: Iceland’s Rainbow Mountains

These photos are from an adventure through the captivating lava field that emerged approximately 600 years ago at the base of Mount Brennisteinsalda. The trail meanders through striking basalt formations and shimmering obsidian, where steam intermittently escapes from the earth's crevices. As we trekked, we admired the dramatic geological features surrounding us, including the colorful Bláhnúkur Mountain and the steaming slopes of Mount Brennisteinsalda. We ascended these peaks before returning along the tranquil river path.

Sheep

The Icelandic sheep stands as a testament to resilience in challenging environments, thriving in Iceland's rugged landscapes and unpredictable weather. Known for their dual-coated wool, these sheep not only provide insulation against the elements but also play a crucial role in preserving traditional farming practices and sustaining rural livelihoods. Their hardiness and adaptability make them a symbol of Iceland's agricultural heritage and cultural resilience.

Iceland's icebergs stand as frozen sculptures of nature's grandeur, floating serenely in the country's glacial lagoons and along its rugged coastline. These majestic formations, born from millennia-old glaciers, offer photographers a canvas of mesmerizing shapes and translucent shades of blue. Each photograph preserves a moment of pristine tranquillity and reminds us of the fragile yet enduring power of the Earth's icy realms.

Arctic Terns

Photographing terns in Iceland poses a unique challenge due to their territorial nature and nesting habits. These graceful seabirds, exemplified by the Arctic tern with its striking plumage and distinctive calls, vigorously defend their nesting sites along coastal cliffs and remote islands. Achieving close-up photographs demands patience and a respectful distance to avoid disturbing their sensitive nesting behaviors. Capturing their aerial acrobatics and interactions with Iceland's rugged landscape adds another layer of complexity, requiring precise timing and a deep understanding of their behavior. Despite these challenges, photographing terns reveals the beauty and allure of observing them in their natural habitat, providing insight into their intricate lives amidst Iceland's stunning maritime scenery.

Birds of Iceland

The birds of Iceland encompass a diverse spectrum, adding color and vitality to its landscapes. In the wetlands and lakes, whooper swans and a variety of waterfowl, including geese and oystercatchers, find refuge and nesting grounds amidst Iceland's pristine scenery. Each species plays a crucial role in Iceland's ecosystem, from the seasonal migrations of geese to the dainty courtship displays of oystercatchers on coastal shores. Together, they embody the resilience and beauty of Iceland's avian inhabitants, captivating birdwatchers and photographers alike with their natural grace and adaptability.

Icelandic reindeer

Encountering Icelandic reindeer in the wild was a rare and memorable experience for Rick and me in Iceland. The moment he mentioned they might be in the East Fjords, I looked out the car window and saw them, their coat colours camouflaged by the rocks surrounding them. Their elusive nature and the remote areas they inhabit added to the allure of witnessing these majestic creatures in their natural habitat. For us, the reindeer represents a unique connection to Iceland's natural history and efforts to manage its wildlife resources sustainably in a changing world

Arctic Fox

In June, during my visit to Iceland, I had the remarkable experience of encountering a black-furred arctic fox that Rick spotted as we were driving leaving Skaftafell. Against the backdrop of Iceland's moss-covered lava, its dark fur stood out strikingly, and I was fortunate enough to capture a captivating photo of this rare sighting.

Puffins of Iceland

Photos taken 70 km from the town of Egilsstaðir, Borgarfjörður Eystri is around an hour and a half drive off Route 1, the ring road around Iceland.

Puffins in Iceland are iconic seabirds celebrated for their vibrant beaks and endearing presence along the country's picturesque coastlines. Nesting in burrows on steep cliffs or in grassy meadows, these charming creatures arrive in large numbers each spring to breed and rear their chicks. Photographing Iceland's puffins offers a chance to witness their comical antics and graceful flight patterns amidst breathtaking natural scenery.
